Leisure Education

Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA) offers Leisure Education programs to compliment its existing services to students with special needs and to provide opportunities for students to learn about community-based recreation outside of the classroom. WDSRA’s goal is to develop leisure options for individuals during the school year which will aid in positive choices in the use of leisure time outside the classroom and throughout adulthood.

Both educators and WDSRA share a commitment to assist in the development of the individual capabilities of children and teens. Through this commitment, a responsibility is accepted to instruct, train, and provide all opportunities available to promote mental, physical, emotional and overall character development. Public Law 94-142, the Education for All Handicapped Act of 1975, assures that all children have available to them a free and appropriate public education. This law emphasizes the need for special education and related services designed to meet student’s unique needs. Recreation is included as a necessary supportive service within the category of related services to achieve maximum potential of every child.

WDSRA’s Leisure Education programs for special education students can range from a one-time cross-country skiing orientation to a carefully structured three-week swim program. Each WDSRA program is specifically tailored to include the goals of the teacher for their students as well as the needs of the students. WDSRA’s programs can provide both skill development and exposure to lifetime recreational pursuits. In addition to functional goals, Leisure Education programs also allow students and teachers valuable opportunities to develop rapport and mutual respect outside of the classroom.

It is WDSRA’s belief that a comprehensive program of leisure education will help special education students develop a basic understanding of the recreation experience. An ongoing orientation and exposure to the many forms of leisure activities available will prepare and motivate students to develop independent hobbies and interests. Thus, Leisure Education has the potential to improve the total quality of their lives in future years. WDSRA has developed the Leisure Education program as a resource in this ongoing pursuit.
